Sensory Processing

Children with sensory processing issues may:

  • Have poor posture control or strength.
  • Have poor equilibrium and balance.
  • Avoidance of upper extremity weight bearing.
  • Discomfort climbing or fear of heights.
  • Challenges establishing dominant hand (right or left handedness)
  • Have poor attention levels
  • Demonstrate inappropriate behavior
  • Be over active
  • Be very lethargic
  • Have difficulties in learning and retaining skills
  • Be unable to comfortably manage crowds or group settings
  • Show immature social skills
  • Suffer from heightened anxiety
  • Be uncoordinated
Sensory processing refers to the way the brain receives, organizes, and responds to input received through the senses. Someone with sensory processing issues may have trouble receiving and/or responding to information that comes in through the senses. Some children with sensory processing disarray issues are oversensitive to stimulants in their environment. Common sounds may be painful or overwhelming. The light touch of a shirt or the back of a chair when seated may cause an uncontrolled response or reaction causing unseen, distracting discomfort.

Sensory processing problems are commonly seen in developmental conditions like autism spectrum disorder. This does not mean, however, that all children with SPD are autistic.

Learning Foundations' 1-on-1 advanced program for sensory processing difficulties has had proven success with thousands of students for more than 40 years. Our program integrates the senses to improve attention through movement. Our research-based strategies that teachers don’t know and schools aren’t teaching, help children when other efforts may have failed.

I will and have recommended Learning Foundations to friends at work. My son Jeremy has a new attitude about responsibility and his grades. He has more confidence when he is in class. So much, in fact, that he feels he no longer needs me to help him with his studies.

Learning Foundations has taught my son Kevin how to spell, read and write. When he comes here, he gets so excited to learn. He will actually pick up a book and read it now. That is amazing!

Every time our daughter Crystal came out of her sessions, she seemed to be oozing with confidence. Kind of like “I’m smart and I know I’m smart.” That is something we’re not used to seeing. She also does an awful lot of reading on her own now.

Fortunately, our trainer Joel warned us that we had to be dedicated by completing our home assignments and not missing appointments. He was very dedicated and accommodated us even on weekends.
